Allbury Travel Group has gone into administration and it's tour operator companies including Argo Holidays, JetLife and Libra Holidays have ceased trading.
This article in the travel press reveals it's a tough world out there and there is a link between this bankruptcy and the recent bankruptcy of flyglobespan.
Surprising to see that there were only 100 passengers abroad at this time but maybe that goes some way to explaining the problems that The Allbury Travel Group had.

Save Hotel Towels - Save The Planet ?!
I have now lost count of the number of times I have stayed at a hotel and read about a policy to help the environment of only changing towels when needed - and having a system where if you leave the towels hanging up they will not be changed...... and the cleaners just disregard it and give out new towels as part of the routine!

Bugibba Malta Holidays
Bugibba is one of the largest resorts in Malta. All the way from Salina Bay to St Paul's Bay you can walk along the kurstlinjen on a lovely walk. During the walk you can enjoy the lovely views over the sea and also the view of St Paul's Island.
The town is very attractive for swimming and sunbathing, although the beach is very rocky. But it has its charm too. On the smooth rocks, it is prefect to lie and "fry" in the sun. Moreover, there are plenty of trails that lead down to the sea where you can cool off with a leisurely swim.
It's worth noting is that the water is very deep, but there tends to be ladders and piers to get direct access to the water and out again. It is very clear in the water and completely safe to swim in.
Bugibba is a real tourist town, there are a lot of hotels along the entire coastline. There are also a lot restaurants serving very nice food. A casino is also available for those that fancy a flutter. Remember to bring your passport and fairly decent clothing. To come in swimsuits and sandals are not recommended.

Burj El Arab Review - Dubai
An account of a trip to the Burj El Arab in Dubai :
I'm going to one of the world's most luxurious hotel, Burj Al Arab in Dubai, and I deeply regret that I accepted to be picked up in the hotel's own white limousines. The guard looks out skeptical until he found my name on the guest list and can confirm that I am one of them. The boom flies up, the gate going into the ground and the duckling may pass.
A man with a red suit, open the piccolo, Give me your hand and help me out. The bags have already been carried away. Ten people with similar outfits greet welcome. A woman splashing some lemon liquid into my hands. I do not know if I should lick it up or wipe it off. I embed my face and trying to look unmoved.
Private butler included
The farther into the great entrance, I will open up the higher ceiling. From the lobby is free visibility about 300 feet straight up. On the 14th floor, I met a new reception and my private butler Hari.
The suite consists of two floors and as many hundred square meters. Windows stretching from floor to ceiling - with the touch of a button opens the curtains to reveal a magnificent view over the sparkling Gulf waters.
Golf cart to the beach
Every time I pass reception down to staff up and smiles. When I leave the room in two minutes is the shoes neatly in a row when I return and the minibar is refilled. I sneeze so no immediate rush forward with a handkerchief.
I unpack my Burj Al Arab-beach bag with all the free stuff that can suit for a day at sea. When I start to walk across the bridge a "res suit" stops me and waves to a golf cart to drive me to the private beach.
Two guys help each other to present towels in different sizes, facial spray with lavender fragrance, deodorant and a chilled face towel. I take a water bottle from the ice filled bucket. One guy immediately hurries forward, taking the bottle from my hands, open it and pour into a glass.

Hotels in Sydney, Australia
I read that the Australian Dollar is pretty strong against the pound at the moment so I thought I would have a look at Sydney hotels to see what sort of prizes we are looking at for November 2009.
So 2 guests, 1 room on 19th November for 2 nights (a weekend). Staying in a four star hotel it seems like we can get the Marque hotel for £55 per room per night and that's the cheapest four star.
Comparing London for the same weekend, the best deal in a four star seems to be about the same price (ignoring stuff like Croydon and Brent Cross). A Hyde Park hotel "Hyde Park Suites" costs £60 per room per night.

Jardines de Nivaria, Tenerife
Hotel Jardines de Nivaria is an excellent top class hotel ideally located right in front of the promenade and the fine Fanabe beach. The beautiful pool area, with direct access to the promenade and sandy beach, offering an exotic vacation setting with lagoon-shaped sea-water pools, waterfalls, fountains, bridges and abundant greenery. Pool restaurant / snack bar La Cascada is making life in and around the sunbeds enjoyable for all the senses.

Still time to catch a late deal to Greece
September is, in my experience a wonderful time to visit Greece.
Why ?
It's not too busy - the school holidays are over for much of Europe so this is a time when couples come to the fore. When it's less hectic, waiters have more time, beaches are less crowded and everything is just that bit more relaxing.
The sea has been warmed all summer so swimming in those turquoise waters is all the more enjoyable.
It's not too hot. Greece can get crazy hot in July and August but by September you will typically experience very pleasurable weather. By October there is a risk of rain but that said October can be very nice too.
Where ?
Rhodes - A personal favourite of mine. Rhodes has had a hard time in recent years with the press overkill on Faliraki and has much more to offer. One of the most diverse Greek islands with some excellent beaches, hotels from typical Greek to world class luxurious and great Greek food of course. Crete - As one of the most southerly Greek islands you get a great chance of some sunshine. Flights from all over the UK and a wide range of choice with regards resorts and hotels. Crete Deals have seven night self catering for under £200pp.
Corfu - Gerald Durrel's favourite. Corfu is a real favourire with Brits and there is a welcoming atmousphere in the resorts. Sidari offers something for everyone and is large enough not to be "dead" by the first week of October as can happen in some smaller resorts at the beginning and end of the tourist season. Corfu flights from UK are available from a wide range of UK airports.
How ?

Hotel Zoo Berlin
I really like Berlin.
Not too pricey (especially if you stick to neighbourhood eateries and the East side) for a capital city and with friendly locals.
You get a totally different impression of Zee Germans when you visit Berlin than an encounter on a beach in Tenerife for example !
A great hotel in Berlin is the Hotel Zoo - A 4 star with a classic exterior and modern rooms. The hotel is right on a busy shopping street "Kurfuerstendamm" something like Oxford street. It's close to the "U-Bahn" (metro / subway / underground) and is overall in a fantastic location from which to explore Berlin.

Best Hotel in Playa Dorada ?
Q : Looking at going back to Dominican Republic but we have kids so fancy the gated resort of Playa Dorada. Which is the best hotel for a British family with young kids ?
A : According to trip advisor and holiday watchdog. Blue Bay Villas Playa Dorada is the best. The hotel is owned by hotetur and can be booked through Thomson or Thomas Cook in the UK.

NH Jolly Carlton Amsterdam
As promised when I booked my hotel in Amsterdam with Lastminute.com secret hotels, here is a review of the NH hotels Jolly Carlton.

Location and surroundings

Nice bed and well furnished. Good air-con that put the guest in control. A decent TV with BBC1 and Sky News among others. There was even a small balcony which may have been nice in the summer or for example watching the Queens day parades. I particularly liked the toiletries from the bathroom.General hotel amenities
I didn't really check anything out. The reception was nice and I blagged a few free sweets there, I never had to wait for a lift. I didn't take the breakfast as the hotel is so close to plenty of different options food wise.Location and surroundings
The Jolly Carlton has an excellent location. I was going to a conference at AIB and was able to use a tram from just around the corner. Also easy to get to from AMS / Schipol airport. I took a walk up from Central station having got the train. Loads to see and do in the surrounding area, good cafes, bars and a variety of shops as well as a flower market.

Booking with Great Late Deals
Looking at Great Late Deals today to see how they shape up.
First price test I did was for the Caledonia Park in Costa Adeje, Tenerife - a three star hotel.
I chose a week in early December and they offered a room for £193 on self catering. I compared this with Cheap hotels in Tenerife / Sunshine who won my previous price challenge, and they offered the same hotel for £197 so clearly GreatLateDeals seem to be very keen on price.
The booking page was fine, I was offered "total financial protection" with no extra charge and was able to pay only the deposit now with the balance approx three months before travel.
For the second challenge I compared a flight & hotel package, trying to get a cheap holiday to Turkey I went to flex holidays and managed to get a late deal to Turkey for a total price for flights & hotel of £275 for two people bed and breakfast at the Swans 1 hotel. Again this turned out be through sunshine The same package at GreatLateDeals was £30 dearer at £304 total cost but to be fair they also offered a 3 star self catering apartment for a total cost together with the flights of £297. Transfers were optional in both cases and were around £30 for 2 people, return.
All in all I am happy to reccomend people look at Great Late Deals when they are in need of a cheap holiday. The website performs well and they offer some good prices on a wide range of holidays.

Bargain hotels in Spain
Travelodge have released one of their big sales. For people able to book now for stays between 27th August and the 30th November there are some really good deals. Just be aware that you have to book online, you have to be fast because when they're gone, they're gone. And once booked the rooms are non transferable and non refundable.
In the UK they have thousands of rooms for sale for just £19 per night (per room)
In Spain there is three hotels where you can get a booking for €20 per night. Two hotels in Madrid and 1 in Barcelona which are both well connected with low cost airlines so you should be able to build a bargain city break with these deals. It also helps that the cheap hotels are available only for early bookings because you also need to book early to get cheap flights. Try skyscanner.net for time saving searching of multiple airlines.

I was looking for a discount code to use for booking a package holiday at Thomson when I suddenly remembered there was an alternative way to get the same holiday for less. Now, we already know it is almost always cheapest to book holiday online but how about booking online with Portland. . .
Not everyone realises that Portland is a direct sell arm for Thomson holidays so you get a lot of the same hotels an apartments and the same flights as when you book with Thomson. You also have the same coach transfer and rep. So you get all the advantages of booking with Thomson - (financial protection, good reputation, quality checked hotels, decent flights, etc etc), but at discounts typically 10% cheaper than the Thomson site.

Lasminute.com secret holidays review
Lastminute.com have added secret holidays to the secret hotels we have reviewed a couple of times when booking the secret hotel in Madrid and secret hotel in Amsterdam.
In the case of secret holidays Lastminute do not give out the flight times or the hotel name until you have booked - and in some cases you won't find out the hotel until you arrive at the resort airport. This is similar to the "allocation on arrival" deals offered by tour operators such as Thomson.
Here is a couple of tips specific to the Lastminute.com secret holidays :
1) You can actually find out which tour operator you will be booked with ! Within the holiday description, towards the bottom there is some information about the holiday being ATOL bonded. They supply the ATOL number so simply click on that and you get to see in a pop up which tour operator is running the holiday. This should help you match up flight times if not likely hotels. In the holidays we looked at, a turkey holiday was operated by Fleetway Travel, a holiday to Spain by Sun 4 U, and an Egypt holiday by Peltours.
2) This varies case by case, but there are examples where the secret holiday really isn't so secret, first a sub resort is given then there is a full hotel description so it's just a case of matching that up with holidays from a normal (non secret) holiday search.
Whether this holiday type is for you just "depends". Don't book this type of holiday of you have mobility problems or if you have any specific requirements such as ground floor room, high floor room, etc. Lastminute.com are giving you the star rating and board basis so there shouldn't be too many problems there.

Lastminute.com secret hotels review
Well despite my previous experience with the Lastminute top secret hotels, I have just booked another one. Here are the details. . .
This time I was booking for Amsterdam and up popped the top secret hotel at a cost of £66 per night. This time, rather than being a complete secret they had named firstly that it would be an NH hotel and secondly that it would be one of the following NH Schiller, NH Doelen, NH Caransa, Jolly Hotel Carlton so with information it was impossible to go wrong.
This time I looked on the NH hoteles website for a direct booking and got these prices.
NH Schiller, €125 per night
NH Doelen, €146 per night
NH Caransa, €110 per night
Jolly Hotel Carlton €94 per night (hotel now known as NH Carlton)
So a lot more expensive whichever hotel I end up with - it's like going back to the happy days of 1.6 € to the pound !
And having looked across far too many other hotel websites including Opodo, Expedia, hostelbookers, booking.com, laterooms, hotels.com and more..... I am confident that for the star rating I couldn't get better than the lastminute.com secret hotel.
If any readers have booked a secret hotel in Amsterdam anywhere else I would love it if you leave a comment with the details.

Apparently it's becoming increasingly likely that the USA will relax travel and investment restrictions it has in place against Cuba. While this is of course good news for those families split up by the strict restrictions, it may spell the end of Cuba as an authentic destination.
How long before McDonalds et al spring up all over Havana and the iconic cars are replaced by USA's MPV castoffs ?

Nice hotel with parking at Glasgow

As part of their 25th birthday celebrations, each week Virgin Atlantic have a special fare on one of their routes. This week it is the wonderful city of Boston.
Economy from £250pp

This is a great price for this time of year which got me looking for some hotel deals in Boston.
